Oceanside, California – June 26, 2015 – The names of 74 sailors lost in a single tragedy are a big step closer to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.

On Friday June 20, 2015 the USS Frank E. Evans DD-754 Association learned that Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced that Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus endorses adding the names of the lost 74 sailors from USS Frank E. Evans DD 754 to the memorial in Washington D.C. The Secretary of the Navy also agrees the Association’s case “has merit to be an exception” for the names to be placed on the memorial wall.

Forty-six years ago, on June 3, 1969, the USS Frank E. Evans (DD 754) collided with the allied flagship of the Royal Australian Navy while engaged in a joint war exercise that had ties to the Vietnam conflict. A total of 74 Americans were killed in the disaster off South Vietnam. Among them were three brothers and the son of a Navy chief onboard who barely survived the catastrophe that resulted in the Seventh Fleet’s only lost warship during the Vietnam War.

It was the second largest single loss of life for the U.S. Navy in that war, after the deadly USS Forrestal Fire. The issue has made recent headlines in the Washington Post and other major newspapers across the United States and has also been featured on a dozen television news outlets.

For decades the Department of Defense has maintained the 74 crewmen did not die in the war and left their names off the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. “Leaving our 74 sailors names off the wall is a grave injustice and is just plain wrong” said Steve Kraus a survivor and Vice president of the USS Frank E. Evans DD-754 Association of survivors, family members of the deceased, and former crewmembers. “We’ve all worked together for over twenty years to convince the United States Secretary of Defense to provide the necessary permission to officially honor our lost 74 crewmembers as casualties of the Vietnam War, and to further honor them by adding each individuals name to the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC. We have high hopes Senator Schumer will be the one to help the association finally accomplish this objective.”

San Diego, California – June 27, 2015 – Nine select artists and leaders will represent the United States at the 2015 World Art Games to be held in Bratislava, Slovakia from September 1 – 9. Chartered in 2011 by Croatian artists, this is the Second International Biennial Event for the rapidly growing organization.

The WAG USA National Committee that was just recently formed and WAG International Organization plan to co-host WAG GAMES 2017 in San Diego, California. The World Art Games (WAG) is currently the largest gathering of visual and performing artists across all disciplines and will include the works of over 400 artists worldwide from 60 countries. The United States just joined that number. During the course of nine days, these select representatives will convene to plan, create, synchronize, and manage cultural activities for the benefit of artists, children, and society worldwide.

“Tantamount to WAG’s expansion, the USA National Committee’s charge is to organize Committees in all 50 US states that coordinate with artists, galleries, museums, foundations, local and state governmental bodies, universities and school boards,” states John R Kazanjian, President of the USA National Committee. “This charge might be considered daunting to some, but it all starts with a first step. To date WAG activities have been self-funded by the artists. Please join us on this eventful journey.” To help send Team USA to the 2nd World Art Games, a Kickstarter Campaign has been created.

The goal of this project is to raise $11,500 by July 12, 2015, and the funds raised will go toward registration fees and travel expenses.

Kickstarter is “all-or-nothing” funding, which means if the campaign does not reach the funding goal then the project cannot move forward.

Police officer Nick Struck was able to console 2 year old Serena after a deadly car crash claimed the life of her father, but her future and that of her family is no lullaby. 

On Thursday June 18th, Stephanie Greer and her family were on their way from Illinois to Denver to start a new job and a new life, but in a second that was all thrown into turmoil when the rear tire of their SUV blew out causing their vehicle to flip multiple times off the road into a field. All but one person were ejected from the vehicle leaving mother with a broken pelvis, 4 year old Zayden in a coma/critical condition with massive head trauma, 3 month old Cruz with 2 broken legs and sisters 2 year old Serena and 3 year old Sophia, with bumps and bruises.

Family member Amanda Howe says, “As well as losing their father, they lost all of their belongings in the accident as it was all doused with gasoline. They had no life insurance. Stephanie is only 23 years old and now faces the burial of her husband, the unknown of her 4 year old son, Zayden, and his medical bills, being separated from her other 3 children as they stay with family back in Illinois so she can focus on Zayden. She also has no job as they were relocating and now no transportation or housing.”

Amanda has set up a Go Fund Me page for the family to help them take the necessary steps to start life from scratch when the physical wounds heal.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or CRPS is a disease that gets very little attention. That will soon change thanks to an upcoming film! The film is “Trial By Fire” and it is being directed and produced by filmmaker, author and Celebrity Chef Charles Mattocks. Mattocks is the son of a woman who so happens to be the only sister of reggae legend Bob Marley.

For Mattocks, making and distributing the movie is a labor of love. He says, “This film is so important to me and the millions that have CRPS. I was inspired by my mother to help her find a way to deal with her pain stemming from this horrible disease. After the sudden loss of my father in November 2015, I wanted to make sure that I didn’t have another loss. The people with CRPS are so strong and loving and they need a voice to help share their stories with the world. This has been a joy and while it’s hard to see people in pain, I know the film will help many.”

The film tells the story of Mattocks’ mother, who is the sister of the late reggae legend, and his efforts to help find effective treatments for her. It also features several persons with CRPS and allows them to tell their stories. As Mattocks points out in the film, between 1.5 and 5 million CRPS patients exists worldwide.

One of the individuals featured in the film is Cindy Fernandez-Morris, who felt very grateful to have a platform to help educate the public on this debilitating disease. According to Morris, “I wish I could tell you what it was like living with CRPS, but until you walk a day in my shoes you can’t comprehend the pains, burdens, and hardships I face on a daily basis. Between the doctors’ appointments, therapies, and treatments to fight the pain I don’t get to thrive in life; I have to survive. I survive holding onto hope that one day there will be a cure for CRPS.”

With over 6 billion people in the world, and other diseases getting the lion’s share of the attention, those who suffer from CRPS seldom have a voice. Mattocks has given them a voice with this new movie!

Mattocks explains that CRPS often begins after an injury and is caused by damage to the central nervous system. This movie will effectively demonstrate how people cope with the disease, the treatments they seek and the impact on families. Mattocks is in the final stages of production and will have a completed film at the end of summer 2015. At that time he plans to distribute the film to several film festivals around the world to garner even more attention for CRPS patients.
