From CP to Hollywood: An Indie Drama About a Disabled Actor

Memphis DiAngelis, who has cerebral palsy, has written a screenplay that promotes acceptance and inclusion of individuals with disabilities.

Memphis DiAngelis is not just trying to produce an independent film. His objective is to broadcast an important message to whole world.

DiAngelis, who has cerebral palsy, wants to get the word out about “inclusion casting.” This means getting work for actors with disabilities. His short film, From CP to Hollywood, is loosely based on his own life. It’s a drama about an actor with a disability trying to make it in Hollywood.

“It’s a difficult road and he runs into one obstacle after another,” says DiAngelis. “With this film, I’m promoting acceptance and inclusion of people with disabilities. This is an important concept and one that people need to understand. Disabled actors have not been able to make any serious inroads into the Hollywood scene.”

There are, however, many documentaries about people with disabilities and organizations that help disabled individuals learn how to make films. Inclusion Films, located in Burbank, Calif., trains disabled adults in the art of filmmaking, producing and editing.

Dan Habib, a filmmaker at the University of New Hampshire’s Institute on Disability, has produced several award-winning documentaries about the disabled, including a film about his son titled Including Samuel. Over the years, Habib has worked hard to overcome the cultural and systemic barriers to inclusion.

DiAngelis has decided to take a different track, attempting to open new doors for actors and actresses with physical and developmental disabilities. “If we can get actual movie roles for the disabled, it would go a long way toward fostering acceptance in our society,” he says. “It would place these individuals in a highly visible place, creating new jobs and opportunities for the handicapped.”

DiAngelis has completed the script and enlisted the services of a co-director. Now comes the hard part: hiring a crew and actors, filming, editing, writing music, marketing and distribution. “I’d like to have well-known actors in the cast to help promote the film,” he says.

Rainer’s Bavarian Grill is sure to stand out

New take-away food stand, housed in a traditional wooden Bavarian house, will feature authentic German cuisine in the heart of London.

Stefan Schenkelberg may be devastated by the recent loss of two family members but he is moving forward with plans to open a unique take-away food business in London.

Named after Schenkelberg’s brother Rainer, it will be called Rainer’s Bavarian Grill and feature authentic German cuisine. Rainer died a few months ago at age 54 after suffering through a life of paralysis caused by cerebral palsy. In the past year, Schenkelberg has also lost an Uncle.

“Rainer loved our homemade German curry sauce the most and he was very excited about the prospects of our opening our food stand in London,” recalls Schenkelberg. “So we are using his memory as motivation for our new business.”

Rainer’s Bavarian Grill, set to open in mid-July, will also have an eye-catching presence as the stand will be housed in a traditional wooden Bavarian house. A location in Islington, one of London’s most busy trading areas, has been secured and a plan is in place to promote the venue through regular Oktoberfest events.

For festival events, the Bavarian Grill will utilize an even more unique structure, a 10-foot tall Coca Cola can with a small kitchen inside.

“We’re going to serve great food and I think people will really notice us. It’s going to stand out, even on a crowded street,” says Schenkelberg, who will run the business with his wife, Regina. “Where else can you get authentic Bavarian cooking to take out?”

In addition, the food stand will use air fryers instead of deep-fat fryers and offer wholesome, low-fat alternatives for those who are focused on healthy diets. “There will be something for everyone, served quickly at a reasonable price,” Schenkelberg says. “We’re targeting businesspeople in the area and expect it to be a very popular spot.”

The business plan has been developed, the menu has been set and food distributors have been lined up. The cooking equipment is ready to go. All that is needed is a small amount of start-up capital, about 10,000 pounds ($15,203 US).

School District Saves $28 Million Through Lease Renegotiation

In the winter season of 2014 the Alvord Unified School District found itself in an uncomfortable spot: it had to vacate a district building deemed by its architects and structural engineers as “not safe for occupancy.”

With just a few weeks to spare, the district scrambled to find new facilities to house its departments and temporarily relocate to portable classrooms at school sites while the district looked for a long-term solution for its administrative offices.

After a hectic search, the district signed a lease for office space that would consolidate the departments into one building. But it wasn’t long before the district discovered that the lease was highly unfavorable to them. The document contained multiple open-ended provisions that included unlimited financial exposure to the district and unreasonable lease terms.

The district was in a bind. On one hand, it desperately needed to move into a new space. On the other, it was stuck with a bad lease—or so district officials thought.

“We did not believe there was much hope to renegotiate any of the terms,” said Kevin Emenaker, the district’s executive director of administrative services.

In a last-ditch effort to save the district from its predicament, the district contacted Todd Dorn, aka The Lease Doctor. The district’s board contracted Dorn to review the lease and suggest ways to renegotiate a contract that was more favorable to the school district.

Dorn studied the lease and found that it contained a clause that worked in the district’s favor. On his advice and with his help, the district board successfully renegotiated the lease.

“Todd accomplished what we believed to be an impossible task,” said Emenaker. “By finding a loophole in the lease language that gave us the leverage to renegotiate the contract, Todd is credited with saving the district over $28 million.”

Dorn, who has 35 years of experience in analyzing and negotiating commercial leases, helped the district save an additional $227,000 when he found a major calculation error in the lease pertaining to the measurement of the building. As a result, the school district was also able to secure an option in the renegotiated lease to purchase the building and gain other benefits.

Renegotiating the lease and forcing the landlord to rewrite it was no easy task for Dorn. “We were brought in to help the school district in restructuring a 65,000-square-foot lease they had already signed,” said Dorn. “On the surface, it appeared to be a lost cause, as it was a lengthy custom lease that was very one-sided and entirely favored the landlord.”

Several states in America including Washington, Colorado and Alaska have legalized the consumption of Marijuana on the grounds of research and several studies which suggest that if consumed in moderation the drug famously known as “Weed” does not cause any lasting mental or physical health issues.

Marijuana advocates have been putting forward an argument saying that alcohol if consumed excessively poses the similar dangers as Marijuana yet it commercially available, therefore authorities should also legalize Marijuana.

New York has just moved forward in reversing the criminal status of Marijuana in the state. Under intense pressure from the local marijuana advocates the state has finally decided to pass a bill that would legalize the consumption of medical marijuana in the state. Which is seen as a step forward in the right direction.

The bill would allow about 20 medical marijuana dispensaries in the state that would be regulated by five organizations. State has also issued the list of disease that would be allowed to acquire medical marijuana, for now the drug would not be available for the general populace but the bill is seen as a softening stance of authorities towards the legalization of the drug.

The patients would be able to take Individual doses of the drug, elderly would also be restricted from consumption of the drug to avoid any harmful side-effects to their health. Several assemblyman including Mr. Richard N. Gottfried has been actively working to legalize marijuana in the state. The states where marijuana has been legalized have been able to generate billions of dollars due to the trade that has contributed to additional progressive work being conducted in the states.

Currently about 23 different states in the country allow some form of marijuana consumption, while the states mentioned above also allow recreational use of the drug. New York has had one of the strict stands over the drugs due to the Rockefeller Drug Law. After the new amendment is passed in the state, New York would join the list of states where marijuana is legal for medical consumptions. Analysts believe that this bill would go forward even farther and result in the commercial consumption and sales of the drug.

New York is one of the largest tourist attractions of the country where millions of people each year visit and if the drug is legalized the state would be able to generate substantial revenues through it. Currently, the drug is illegally transported all across the country the legalization would eliminate the criminal element from the proceedings and would create a stable and thriving industry.
