YACHTING INDUSTRY CELEBRATES GOING GREEN INITIATIVE

ANTIGUA, WEST INDIES – 27 Apr, 2017 – Charter Yacht Brokers Association (CYBA) announced the recent winners of the “Going Green To Save The Blue” Campaign with the purpose of educating the yachting community about plastic water bottle pollution in time for the start of the busy charter yacht season.

The campaign targets the charter yacht industry’s yacht owner, crews and the general public in an effort to raise awareness of the amount of plastic water bottles consumed on charter yachts and hence polluting our landfills and oceans.  CYBA has spearheaded this effort in conjunction with promoting numerous eco friendly practices for the past five years.  The “Designer Water” contest held annually to feature “yacht made” water and to reduce the use of plastics on board yachts represents CYBA’s ongoing efforts to minimize the environmental impact on our oceans.

Over a dozen yachts ranging from 60 foot catamarans to a classic 265 foot super yacht, showcased their “Designer Waters”.  The winners announced:

     REE – 111’ sailing yacht for Hibiscus Martini Water

     NERO – 265’ mega yacht for Coriander and Passionfruit Water

     ROSEHEARTY – 183’ sailing for Moranga infused Detoxifying Water

The effort to reduce water bottles includes education beyond yacht owners and crews as broker members of the CYBA organization offer their clients an opportunity to choose the refreshing yacht water over plastic bottles.  The yacht crews have embraced the effort by making the switch to filtered boat water cutting plastic waste in half.  One mega yacht owner saw savings of $9,000 annually with just crew making the switch.

CYBA President, Trish Cronan, spearheaded the initiative and stated, “Trash is not a glamorous subject it is downright toxic when you think of millions of plastic water bottles that super yachts and charter yachts send to landfills each year.”

CYBA members have applauded and encouraged all yachting practices that embrace the “Going Green to Save the Blue” campaign including green cleaning products, reef friendly sunscreens and solar panel energy sources.

NEW REPORT: $7.5 Million for Demolition Preserves over $30 Million in Home Values

Jackson, Michigan used the U.S. Treasury’s Hardest Hit Fund, part of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and administered by Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), among other sources, for demolition of blighted homes. A report by Detroit-based Dynamo Metrics showed $7.5 million in demolition preserved over $30 million in neighborhood home values.

JACKSON, MI – 27 Apr, 2017 – A report released today by the Detroit-based data analytics company Dynamo Metrics LLC, shows 612 demolitions conducted by the city of Jackson over the last five years preserved $30,177,684 in home values across the city. 

Since early 2012, Jackson has aggressively demolished condemned and city-owned nuisance houses.  Initially using general revenue funds, Jackson later used funding made available from the Community Development Block Grant program, the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, and U.S. Treasury’s Hardest Hit Fund. Jackson spent $7,507,085 for 612 demolitions between 2012 and 2016. The average demolition cost $12,266.

Dynamo Metrics estimates that this investment preserved $30,177,684 in neighboring home value, highlighting $4.02 in preserved home values for every demolition dollar spent.

To establish these estimates, Dynamo Metrics used spatial econometric modeling to identify how much worse neighborhoods with distressed houses are compared to vacant lots. On average, a distressed house near a home reduces the home’s value by 2.07 percent. A nearby vacant lot, on the other hand, reduces a home’s value by only .58 percent. By turning a distressed house into a vacant lot through demolition, roughly 1.5 percent of the nearby home’s value is preserved.  

Jackson has consistently targeted the worst nuisances for demolition – houses that were both condemned as dangerous, and tax foreclosed.

“It is common knowledge that vacant and condemned properties are bad for neighborhoods,” Jackson Mayor Bill Jors said. “They are magnets for crime and lower property values. Now we know just how much home values are negatively affected by surrounding blight and distressed structures. “Our long-term strategy of blight elimination is literally paying off,” he added.

The Jackson demolition study was made possible by a collaborative, data-sharing exercise amongst various city departments and the Jackson County Treasurer. Dynamo Metrics created an innovative data system from various government sources.

“City leaders can now better understand the financial impact of their target investments,” City Manager Patrick Burtch said. “Data-driven decision making is imperative, and firms like Dynamo Metrics affords us the ability to predict outcomes of program initiatives.”

Dynamo Metrics has conducted similar studies for Detroit, greater Cleveland, and the Ohio Housing Finance Agency. These studies have consistently demonstrated that vacant and abandoned houses depress neighborhood values, and blight removal protects property values and homeowner equity.

“Our investigation in Jackson shows that blight removal does not only benefit big cities like Detroit and Cleveland,” said Nigel Griswold, managing director of Dynamo Metrics and principal investigator of the Jackson report. “Cities of any size can improve their housing market dynamics by eliminating nuisance properties.”

Created by Jordon P. Lologo, “Snowflakes & Whackjobs” turns the usual game of outlandish political statements that both Republicans and Democrats constantly make into something that people can enjoy together and have fun with.

“Snowflakes & Whackjobs” is a neutral game that points out exotic claims made by both liberal and conservative politicians. The card game’s very title plays with the name-calling reality that both political sides engage in against each other. “The card game is filled with all these ridiculously funny quotes that high-profile Democratic and Republican politicians have become known for, and the game’s goal is for players to guess whether each quote belongs to a Snowflake aka Democrat, or a Whack Job aka Republican,” the crowdfunder detailed.

“More than being challenging, the game is based on political quotes that are easy and some that are not so easy to recognize. The point really is to provide the right context and opportunity for people from all sides to have fun together, relax, laugh about it and get a healthy dose of perspective about just how much this crazy political reality shouldn’t be taken that seriously,” Jordon commented.

Along with the funny quotes, the wildcards of “Snowflakes & Whackjobs” have caricature-style illustrations of political figures and the scandals that they’ve gotten involved with. The “Private Server Wildcard” with Hilary Clinton panicking behind a computer screen, as well as the “Donald Trump Wildcard” with Trump building a wall while laughing, are humorous and sarcastic representations designed to help even the most passionate political activist have a laugh.

While the card game’s content is safe for all ages, there is an expanded edition for those who have a darker sense of humor. The NSFW Celebrity Edition Expansion Pack will feature more controversial wildcards, such as “The Pussy Grab Wildcard”, displaying a pair of orange hands grabbing a clearly disturbed cat. “This special Edition will only be available on Kickstarter, so backers have a unique chance of owning it exclusively through our crowdfunding campaign. It will not be available for retail,” Mr. Lologo announced.

Political divisiveness in the US has reached a peak. With both sides of the political aisle engaging in outright conflict in America’s streets, and with politicians feeding those strong emotions, the “Snowflakes & Whackjobs” project hopes to “bring people together through laughter, since, after all, we all have more in common than we’re lately realizing”, Jordon stated.
