Give OUT Day raises over $550,000 for LGBTQ-related nonprofits

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – 29 Apr, 2017 – Last Thursday, April 20, was a historic day for the LGBTQ community. And it all happened in the scope of 24 hours.

During the nation’s largest and only 24-hour fundraising event for LGBTQ-related nonprofits, Give OUT Day raised a total $550,000. With the addition of leaderboard prize awards and matching gifts secured before the day, Give OUT Day raised more than $700,000 for LGBTQ nonprofits.

Horizons Foundation, the world’s first foundation dedicated to the LGBTQ community, hosted this year’s record-breaking event. The foundation partnered with Click & Pledge, a Blacksburg tech company that helps nonprofits organize and promote their online fundraising initiatives.

This year’s top organizations — Southerners on New Ground (SONG), Equality North Carolina (EQNC), and Genders & Sexualities Alliance Network (GSA Network) — received donations from the greatest number of unique donors and collectively raised over $63,000. SONG raised $30,130 from a record-setting 711 donors. EQNC raised $16,210 from 633 donors, while GSA Network received $16,901 from 428 unique donors.

Smaller, local organizations — like Freedom Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, and The Source LGBT+ Center in Visalia, Calif. — saw astonishing boosts in their fundraising capabilities. Freedom Oklahoma and The Source LGBT+ Center raised $7,617 and $11,710, respectively.

“It’s exciting to see so many organizations successfully engage not only current, but new donors to give,” said Nikole Pagan, Give OUT Day Program Manager at Horizons Foundation. “For some of these groups, Give OUT Day provides the opportunity to engage more supporters in a single day than they reach the entire rest of the year.

The foundation upped its ante from last year’s Give OUT Day, which earned over $445,000 nationwide.

“It’s encouraging to see donors step up in such a generous way at higher levels of giving than previous years while making donations to support LGBTQ people across all 50 states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico,” said Dr. Francisco O. Buchting, Horizons Foundation’s Vice President of Grants, Programs, and Strategic Initiatives. “Especially in the current political climate, when the need is greater than ever.”

With over 560 nonprofits participating in their Give OUT Day, both the foundation and Click & Pledge believed the event’s increased promotional efforts, along with the current political climate, helped bring in new donors and shed light on unheard causes.

“Events like Give OUT Day are of the utmost importance in order to bring these causes to the forefront,” said Kamran Razvan, CEO of Click & Pledge. “2017 is an incredibly crucial year for the nonprofit community, especially when it comes to online fundraising. Nimble Collective CSU Animation Class Encouraging Applications by May 15 for Portfolio Review, Win Scholarship Dollars for Program

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA – 29 Apr, 2017 – Nimble Collective announced today it is partnering with the California State University’s Summer Arts Program in both the scholarship application process and the mentoring of selected students. Scholarships, ranging from $100 to $2000, will be awarded to the top five submissions for use toward the CSU Summer Arts class.

CSU Summer Arts students must apply by May 15 to be considered for the Nimble Collective CSU Summer Arts scholarship. If accepted into the program, they will be guided by Nimble’s leaders, the industry professionals who have brought the world such films as How to Train Your Dragon, MegamindLord of the RingsToy Story, and more.

It is recommended that students have at least two years’ experience in Maya computer animation and modeling software. Students will work on an animated group film including all key aspects of production including storyboard creation, modeling, animating characters, lighting shots and more.

A Tournament of Words: The way publishers discover authors just changed forever.

SEATTLE, WA – 29 Apr, 2017 – Before children dreamed of becoming popstars and actors, they dreamed of becoming authors. Social writing platform Prose has announced joining forces with publishing giant Simon & Schuster, whose legacy includes Ernest Hemingway, Carrie Fisher, and Stephen King.

Simon & Schuster’s editing team hopes to discover the next generation of great authors by utilizing Prose’s challenge feature and social integration, initially through a 500-2000 word writing challenge that ends June 1.

You are prompted to, “Write a story, chapter, or essay about whatever you like. The 50 best entries will be announced by Prose and read by Simon & Schuster’s editorial staff for consideration.”

This challenge stipulates a minimum of 500 entries and a maximum of 2,000. Prose plans to announce the top-50 entries on June 21, 2017.

The engineer who wrote Prose, who goes by the pseudonym “Z,” remarks, “This challenge represents a fun way for writers to interact with one another and catch a publisher’s eye.”

Only time can tell if publishing history just began its next chapter.

HELPS International Offers Gifts of Empowerment to Guatemalan Women

ADDISON,TX – 29 Apr, 2017 – This Mother’s Day, Dallas nonprofit HELPS International is asking people to celebrate the women who shaped them by donating a tax-deductible, life-changing gift designed to empower the women of Guatemala. The HELPS100 Campaign was created to help 100 Guatemalan women obtain fuel-efficient cook stoves and high-quality water filters.

“This campaign to celebrate and empower women is such a worthy cause and donations can be made on behalf of the women in our own lives who inspire us,” stated Bill McMillan, executive director of HELPS International. “For as little as $50, we can honor our mothers, sisters and friends while changing the lives of women in some of Guatemala’s most underserved communities.”

Millions of women in rural Guatemala must spend hours each day kneeling on dirt floors to cook over open fires in their homes in order to feed their families. This results in many small children suffering severe burns from the flames of the open pits in their homes. In addition to the risk of burns, smoke from the open fires builds up quickly and causes respiratory issues from poor ventilation. And very few of these same homes are equipped with clean sources of water that are safe for drinking.

To solve these issues, former HELPS medical team leader Don O’Neal, a retired mechanical engineer, invented a simple stove from locally sourced materials. The concrete-block base, Plancha-top (Spanish for “iron”) ONIL stove replaces traditional ground-based, in-home cooking fire pits and is vented through the dwelling’s rooftop to eliminate both respiratory problems and the risk of severe burns. It also reduces wood consumption by 70 percent, allowing increased time for activities once spent gathering wood. To facilitate a clean drinking water source, the ONIL Gravity Water Filters now eliminate 100 percent of parasites and 99.9 percent of pathogenic bacteria.

As a part of this year’s campaign, HELPS International is on a mission to raise crucial funds to help 100 Guatemalan women stand up, save money and keep their families healthy and safe by donating fuel-efficient cook stoves and high-quality water filters. Donations will go to purchase the ONIL stoves and water filters, which will be installed by volunteers from the HELPS Women Helping Women initiative alongside the recipients, who have paid a portion of the cost.

Rising Senior Football Recruit George Bento is Turning Heads at St. Lucie West High School in Port St. Lucie Florida

At 6’3 and 245 pounds George Bento is versatile athlete displaying strength and speed with the ability to play multiple positions.

Bento is listed as a linebacker, but will play a lot of defensive end and defensive line for first year Head Coach Jamar Chaney at 8A St. Lucie West High School in Port St. Lucie Florida.

He will also line up at tight end on offense and play some long snapper if needed.

Bento who transferred to St. Lucie West Centennial High School in Port St. Lucie Florida is getting a lot recruiting interest from BCS and FCS NCAA Division 1 Football Programs.

“George is definitely fast enough, quick enough and strong enough to play linebacker at the 8A Florida level, but his hand moves, strength and quickness make him almost unstoppable at defensive end or three technique, college coaches really like his game.” – Coach Chaney

Bento who played on the defensive line and offensive line at 6A Jensen Beach before transferring will have the benefit of playing next to one of the upcoming dominant rising junior lineman in the area.

“At Jensen Beach I was the biggest guy on the starting defensive line, now I have a very athletic, 340 pound teammate, teams are going to have to double and triple team him so I am going to get to create a lot of havoc if I only have one lineman to beat. Teams are going to really have a hard time stopping us.” – says Bento

Recently Bento was named to the TC Palm Scripps “On the Cusp” pre spring top player list ranking him as one of the top 18 players in the region.

The recruiting class on the Treasure Coast of Florida may be in the best in recent history with 6 players already receiving offers from Power 5 Football Schools.
He was also invited to the NUC All American North South Game played in Daytona Beach Florida in December 2017.

The Treasure Coast used to be the part of the Florida East Coast that recruiters would pass over because of its location between Miami and Orlando. Not anymore!
As a junior, Bento had been a star player on defense for Jensen Beach, starting on both sides of the ball since the 10th grade. He also started on all special teams and played Lacrosse at Jensen Beach.

Bento turned into a defensive star at Jensen Beach in his junior year, compiling 49 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, 8 sacks, 20 quarter back hurries, 2 pass deflections and 1 forced fumble in just 9 games as primarily an interior defensive lineman.
His stats going into his senior year place him among the top returning defensive line players in the area.

Taking his talents to 8A St. Lucie West was a bold move that he hopes will help his football development as a high school player and a college football recruit.

“I am very excited to be here at St. Lucie West Centennial High School, we have a lot of coaches with college experience and we have a lot of players on our team to make our practices more competitive, we did not have enough players at Jensen Beach to have competitive practices last year.”

St. Lucie West is one of the largest schools in the area and plays against some of the best schools in the state including powerhouse schools Vero Beach, Treasure Coast & Ft. Pierce Central.

St. Lucie West is coached by former NFL player and St. Lucie West graduate Jamar Chaney. Chaney played linebacker in college football at Mississippi State where he was an All SEC player and MVP of the Senior Bowl. He spent five years in the NFL playing for the Eagles, Falcons, Broncos and Raiders.

At St. Lucie West George will be moving to linebacker under the guidance of Coach Chaney and his staff.

The move to linebacker for Bento is a testament to his athleticism. Bento who runs a 4.85 forty yard dash and has a 4.65, 5-10-5 shuttle is quick for his size. He also has a 30+ inch vertical jump and a broad jump over 8’6”.

Bento is also very strong compared to high school standards with a 315 bench press, 405 squat and 245 power clean.

His strength numbers are only going to go up heading into his senior season.

At the college level Bento is projected to be a run stop linebacker or defensive end/3 technique defensive lineman, he could also play tight end on offense.

If he can progress and have success at linebacker in his senior year at St. Lucie West Centennial his recruiting interests are likely to rise gaining more interest at bigger programs.

There are over 60+ BCS & FCS football programs that have shown interest in Bento since his sophomore season.

“There are a lot of schools that are coming to see George and his teams this spring at Centennial, I think he is going to get a lot of offers really soon.” – Coach Chaney

This spring George has been invited to numerous junior days and summer camps.

“After the spring, I am going to sit down with my family and Coach Chaney to discuss the camps that I plan to attend this summer, I want to make sure to go the camps at the college teams that are the most interested in offering me a scholarship or who have already offered me a scholarship, there is only so much we can do and still train for the season.” – says Bento

Last fall after his junior season George was invited to an unofficial visit at Georgia Tech where he attended a game against Virginia and was able to take a tour of the football facilities and program.

Last summer before his junior season, George had the opportunity to attend the All Poly Football Camp near Salt Lake City, Utah. George is of Polynesian ancestry and was able to connect with his Polynesian roots and participate in a great football camp with some of the top players in the country.

The camp was attended by over 100 college coaches and George did extremely well impressing coaches from schools like Utah, Colorado, Arizona State, Idaho, Hawaii and Fresno State.
He was able to make unofficial visits to Utah and Weber State on his trip to the All Poly camp.

He plans to attend the same camp next summer taking unofficial visits to Colorado, Colorado State, Colorado Mesa and Colorado State Pueblo.

He has also been contacted with letters and emails from Kansas, USC, Kentucky, Louisville, Cincinnati, Tulsa, Alabama Birmingham and many others.

Right now, USF, UCF, Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State & Mercer are some of the schools that have shown the most interest, but George is open to learning more about other schools and programs.

He holds offers from a few schools including NCAA D2 powerhouse Colorado Mesa.

George was invited to participate in 2017 Nike Opening Regional.

He was also invited to Rivals Camp Series and the Blue Grey All American Combine and the NUC All American Combine.

His goal is to find the right program fit for his education and football. George is interested in majoring in General Studies with an interest in Environmental Studies has a 3.2 GPA.
