Flood damage in Texas from Hurricane Harvey may equal that resulting from 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

“Houston, the coastal area and a wide swath of inland Texas have been hammered by this storm that doesn’t seem to let up,” says Situs Chief Executive Officer Steve Powel. “The level of property damage to commercial, industrial and residential real estate is unprecedented to anything I have experienced, in almost three decades of residence in Houston. Of significant concern is the fact that so many residences and businesses don’t have flood insurance, because they are located outside of the federally designated flood zone areas. One colleague said today, this is like the ‘800-year flood!’ No doubt property and casualty insurers will have their hands full, but the federal government is likely to bear a significant monetary burden of the underinsured, and the significant investments that will be required to address the city’s necessary infrastructure improvements.”

Powel adds, “Based on past experiences from major storms in the U.S. and Caribbean, aside from the hardships experienced by so many families, the rebuilding effort will no doubt be a stimulus to the Houston economy, which has been challenged by the adverse impact of the depressed energy sector over the past two years. While no one would suggest that the storm was a good thing, rebuilding the fourth largest city in the U.S. will present future opportunities.”

The storm settled over Houston creating flooding of “historic proportions” in the nation’s fourth largest city, according to the National Weather Service. The images emerging from the area are horrifying and with up to 50 inches of rain forecast, the storm conditions continue.

FEMA Administrator Brock Long, who expects 450,000-plus people to apply for federal assistance says, “The state of Texas is about to undergo one of the largest recovery housing missions the nation has ever seen.”

The LEGO Ninjago Movie is an upcoming 3D computer-animated action-comedy martial arts film that’s being directly by Charlie Bean, with writing by Dan and Kevin Hageman of the LEGO movie and LEGO Ninjago Series. The film will feature a star studded cast including Jackie Chan, Dave Franco, Fred Armisen and Zach Woods. Following the LEGO Ninjago toy line, this is the first film to be based on original LEGO property. It is also the second spin-off installment from the 2014 film, The LEGO Movie, following the release of The LEGO Batman Movie during early 2017.
 
The Fold has been writing music for the LEGO Ninjago TV series since the show’s inception in 2011. The series airs in over 45-countries worldwide, and will be heading into its 8th season in 2018. To date, The Fold has written over 25-songs for the LEGO series.

National Nonprofit Calls on President Trump to Designate a State Funeral for the Last Medal of Honor Recipient from World War II

State Funeral for World War II Veterans organizes to petition for the highest honor as a salute to all World War II veterans and the Greatest Generation

NEW ORLEANS, LA – 1 Sep, 2017 – To commemorate the 73rd anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (JV Day), September 2, 1945, the non-profit organization State Funeral for World War II Veterans, launches a nationwide petition drive to convince the President of the United States to designate a state funeral for the last Medal of Honor from World War II. 

This single state funeral would provide special recognition, and serve as a final salute to all 16 million men and women who served in the United States armed forces between 1941 and 1945.

In total, 464 Medals of Honor were awarded to servicemen in World War II.  Only four of these recipients are living today.   Designating a state funeral in Washington, D.C., for the final living Medal of Honor recipient is a fitting to honor the Greatest Generation.   

Citizens can go to www.worldwar2salute.org to sign the petition, which requests that President Donald Trump designated this single state funeral.  

“Our nation has had many state funerals for generals, but never one for an enlisted man,” said State Funeral for World War II Veterans Co-founder Bill McNutt. “All four of the remaining Medal of Holders from World War II were enlisted men. We hope to convince the President take action to honor not only the final Medal of Honor Holder from World War II, but also the millions who gave their all to fight for our country and protect our liberty.”

“The last Medal of Honor recipient from World War II deserves the honor of a State Funeral as a final salute to all the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who defeated Imperialism, Fascism, and Nazism,” McNutt said. “We cannot imagine the extent of their pain as a generation, but we can honor the extent of their service and sacrifice.”

HISTORY AND THE LAW

Under American law, the President of the United States has the sole authority to designate a state funeral and he may do so for any deserving citizen of his choosing. Historically, presidents have designated these funerals for generals and other extraordinary Americans.

In 1921, President Warren Harding designated a state funeral for the Unknown Soldier from World War I. President Harry Truman designated a state funeral in 1948 for General John Pershing. President John F. Kennedy signed the papers to allow a State funeral for General Douglas MacArthur and President Lyndon extended this directive.

In the 13 years that have passed since the state funeral of the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Wilson Reagan, much has changed. The nation is divided in many ways and yearns for a non-political event to bring us together as one – to celebrate the sacrifice and accomplishments of our Greatest Generation.

National Board member, Brigadier General (retired) John T. Digilio, Jr, said, “State funerals are held in order to involve the entire nation in a day of memory. The kind of day that the young carry with them into old age and a day that changes lives of some from self–centeredness to selfless service.” 

Of the Medals of Honor presented for World War II, many were posthumous awards. Only 198 were presented to living military personnel, only four remain. The four living recipients are:

  • Robert D. Maxwell: Oregon, a Technician Fifth Grade in the U.S. Army, 96 years of age, born October 26, 1920
  • Charles H. Coolidge: Tennessee, a Technical Sergeant in the U.S. Army, 95 years of age, born August 4, 1921
  • Hershel Woodrow Williams: West Virgina, Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, 93 years of age, born October 2, 1923
  • Francis S. Currey: New York, a Private First Class in the U.S. Army, 91 years of age, born June 29, 1925

As the highest possible honor bestowed upon a person posthumously; state funerals are an entitlement for three classes of Americans: presidents and former presidents of the United States,?presidents-elect of the United States and any other persons designated by the President

General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Allied Commander of the Pacific, and General Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander of Europe, were each duly honored by the nation with state funerals.  The selfless, brave men and women who served under them deserve the honor of special recognition at a state funeral for the final Medal of Honor holder from World War II.

Couple Celebrates One Year Anniversary of Wildlife Habitat and Bird Sanctuary in Tijeras, New Mexico

TIJERAS, NEW MEXICO – 1 Sep, 2017 – One year ago this month, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), America’s largest wildlife conservation and education organization, recognized Lawrence and Kristen Clark in Tijeras for having successfully certified their Wildlife Habitat through its Garden for Wildlife program.  This month, the Clarks are celebrating the habitat’s one year anniversary. 

Kristen and Lawrence certified their mountainous habitat in response to the “Dog Head” fire in June of last year.  “We experienced a sudden influx of both birds and wildlife immediately after the fire and we wanted to do our part to create a safe haven for them,” the Clarks said.  “In fact, in just this past year alone, we’ve had 32 different bird species come through our habitat, many of which have nested and are now raising young.”

Common visitors to our bird sanctuary include chickadees, Steller’s jays, juncos, pine siskin, and house finches, while special appearances were made by a black-throated gray warbler and Williamson’s sapsucker. The Clarks provide for the wild birds with several birdbaths and over a dozen bird feeders. “We go through about 80 pounds of bird seed a month,” said Kristen, “but providing water is the most critical aspect of what we do.  A bird will die from dehydration before it will die from starvation, especially during critical winter months or droughts when water is scarce.”

Even wild mammals need water, as evidenced by the photographs Kristen took this summer of a mule deer drinking water from her birdbath out back.  Other mammals frequenting the wildlife habitat include Abert’s and rock squirrels, brush and cottontail bunnies, coyotes, and a pair of wolves.  She explains, “We’re sensitive to the balance of nature, and wildlife and birds have a great stake in that balance.”
