Kempten, Bavaria – December 6, 2018 – Responding to global demand for improved monitoring of nitrate in freshwater, OTT HydroMet has launched a new optical nitrate sensor, the OTT ecoN. “This is fantastic news for scientists, catchment managers, water companies, regulators and environmental consultants,” says Ronan O’Maitiu, Global Product Manager for the OTT ecoN. “In the past, customers have been caught between low-cost/limited-performance sensors and high-end technologies, for which purchase costs prevent large scale deployment. The OTT ecoN neatly fills that gap; as a continuous nitrate monitor, with minimal maintenance requirements, it can be left to monitor in remote locations, and an optional wiper makes it suitable for extended deployments.”

In addition to a low purchase cost, the ecoN also lowers the cost of ownership because it is factory calibrated for life. With automatic drift compensation, zero baseline checks with ultrapure water are quick and easy to perform and are only required as an occasional test of instrument function.

The ecoN measures nitrate by the absorption of UV light at 212 nm and removes the possible effects of organics and turbidity by similar measurements at 254 nm and 360 nm respectively. As an optical sensor, the ecoN provides high accuracy and low resolution without the drift and interferences of ion-selective electrodes, or the ongoing reagent and maintenance costs of wet-chemistry analyzers.

No specialized software is necessary to communicate with the ecoN – a simple, intuitive browser-based user interface is accessed by connecting a small interface unit to the sensor.

Measurements can be stored internally within the sensor, but as a specialist in sensing, datalogging and telemetry, OTT HydroMet can supply the most appropriate monitoring system for every application. This includes the choice of sensor, because the ecoN is available with different cell pathlengths to ensure optimum performance across all measurement ranges. However, OTT HydroMet is also able to conduct a retrospective change of optical path length when customers need to change application, such as moving it from very turbid surface water to groundwater for example.

Puerto de La Cruz – December 6th, 2018 – Threatened species and ecosystems on the American continent will receive almost 60 per cent of the funds ($577,000), followed by projects focusing on European nature, which will receive just over $203,000, and African projects, which total $126,000. Asia, with $73,000, and Australia-Oceania, with $21,000, close the funding, which reaches the five continents and will be distributed among 40 conservation and research projects to be implemented by 34 NGOs and universities around the world.

By country, Colombia stands out, as it will receive almost $145,000, followed by the Philippines, Brazil and Bolivia, which will receive just over $60,000 each. However, the list of states is much longer, and this year the Foundation will also carry out projects in Mexico, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Cuba, Belize, Costa Rica, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Cape Verde, Madeira, New Zealand and Polynesia. In addition, some of these projects are trans-national, so their benefits will reach the ecosystems and endangered species of many other bordering countries.

From an ecological point of view, terrestrial species and ecosystems are the ones that will receive the most help from the Loro Parque Foundation ($800,000). Among them is the Philippine cockatoo – on the red list of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as critically endangered – whose project will receive $68,000 to continue securing the populations on the island of Rasa and try to extend the reproductive success achieved in that area to other places in the region.

Other major projects on terrestrial species and ecosystems are aimed at protecting lions in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, the Great Green Macaw and the Lilacine Amazon in Ecuador, or the Blue-throated Macaw in Bolivia – all of which will receive funding in excess of $60,000 in 2019.

Also of great importance is the effort in the conservation of marine species and ecosystems, to which the Loro Parque Foundation will dedicate $200,000 next year. Of these, almost three quarters will be allocated to cetaceans (orcas, dolphins, humpback whales and pilot whales), through different research projects for their welfare, the monitoring and conservation of the orca population of the Straits of Gibraltar, or the development of systems to prevent the accidental stranding of pilot whales.

It’s also important to note the participation in a project on the island of Madeira for the conservation of the Mediterranean Monk Seal, a species listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List – making it Europe’s most endangered marine mammal. In addition to the marine mammal projects, the Foundation will also continue conservation work on other species, such as sea turtles and sharks, during 2019.

The 15 shortlisted cities are Santa Fe (Argentina), Sydney (Australia), Salvador (Brazil), Repentigny (Canada), Wuhan (China), Yiwu (China), Santa Ana (Costa Rica), Surabaya (Indonesia), Milan (Italy), Guadalajara (Mexico), Utrecht (Netherlands), Kazan (Russia), eThekwini (South Africa), Mezitli (Turkey), New York (United States).

Launched jointly by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) and Guangzhou Municipal Government and supported by United Cities and Local Governments and World Association of Major Metropolises, the Guangzhou Award is held biennially and aims to recognize cities and local governments for their successful practices in innovation that are valuable for worldwide replication and reward excellent performances in urban innovation, encourage innovation by cities and local governments, improve local governance and promote and disseminate successful initiative on urban innovation as well as sustainable development.

More than 700 initiatives of 150 cities from 50 countries have participated the award program every other year since its establishment in 2012, with theme areas ranging from infrastructure, public service, urban planning, good governance, partnerships, technology, resilience, social inclusion to gender equality.

Updated Guangzhou Award

Different from the previous Guangzhou Award, the newly-added World Mayor Forum is highlighted the event this year, which aims to set up a multilateral platform for governments to advance cooperation and exchanges in a bid to achieve win-win in global urban governance and promote inclusive innovation in sustainable development.

Promote building international community

Themed with ”Global Openness and Inclusive Innovation“, the Guangzhou Award this year focuses on issues of Blockchain: Tools for Governing Metropolitan and Urban Management, the Belt and Road and Urban Construction, and Cultural Heritage and Innovation of Future Cities.

In order to build the international community for exchanges, Guangzhou actively participates many high-level international events such as the World Economic Forum, the Boao Asia Forum and the China Development Forum and hosted 13 international events like Guangzhou Annual Investment Conference (China).

According to Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office, the city now has 37 international friendship cities and 34 friendly cities of international exchange and cooperation after years of efforts. It has also established close ties with international organizations and more than 200 cities all over the world through the Guangzhou Award program.

Make dreams come true

After experiencing the rapid development in the past 40 years of reform and opening up, the southern Chinese city now puts more efforts in creating city brand and enhancing soft power by innovating urban governance.

As Dr. Joan Clos, UN Under-Secretary General and the executive director of UN – HABITAT, said on the sidelines of the World City Day held in the city on October 31, 2017 that “Guangzhou is the best illustration of ‘City makes life better.’”

Reputed as the Chinese flower city, Guangzhou has proved itself as a model of urban landscape and ecological restoration for the nationwide emulation.
